The pharmaceutical news seems to be dominated by GSK and their move away from "white pill / Western markets" towards focusing on growth in emerging markets and its consumer products operations.
Whilst GSK claim their strategy is vital for future growth, there remains a great deal of scepticism, due in no small part to the fact that more job losses (up to 3,000 or 4,000 if reports are to be believed) can be expected as the main focus of the R&D changes within the organisation.
It also remains to be seen whether the current wave of 'job cuts' will be offset by recruitment in other areas (non-pharmaceutical) within the business such as manufacturing, research, administration, sales etc.....not that this will give any comfort to those who are being "shown the door."
There seems to be a lot of anguish over the latest cull at GSK and in some online communities there is an overwhelming feeling that the future of UK science and technology/drug research and development/drug discovery will be in serious jeopardy should redundancies such as this continue to occur.
